Beef & Broccoli

Tonight I wanted to try to make something I never had before. I had two top sirloins just waiting for something...but they weren't the kind that I'd want to throw on the grill. A little thin for my taste. AND I went and got the rice vinegar I was missing for the Chicken Teriyaki Noodle Bowls so I figured I'd try to make the sauce again and use it for a marinade. Turned out pretty tasty although I might make a BIT more sauce for the rice in the end.

I give you...Beef & Broccoli (with rice)

~ Ingredients ~

Serves 4
  • 1 or 2 broccoli heads
  • 1 - 10 ounce thin top sirloin
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tsp ground ginger (or 2 inches of fresh grated ginger)
  • 1/4 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 2 tbsp water
  • a pinch of crushed red pepper

~ Directions ~

The first thing I did was make the sauce in a small cereal bowl. Mix everything in the ingredients list above from brown sugar to red pepper.

Then I cut my steak (one to start) into strips. The pieces were about 2-3 inches x 1/2 inch. or 7 -10 cm x 2 cm.

Once I had them cut, I put them in a big enough dish that they could be covered by the marinade. Then I put them in the fridge for about 30 minutes.

While that marinading business is going on, I cut the other steak up and made more sauce. I put the second set into a freezer bag and put it in the freezer for another meal :)

Then I chopped up the broccoli. Voila!

I was going to show you the broccoli steaming and the bags of rice cooking (yes, I used bagged rice. About 2 cups total), but then my cookie from Monday got jealous and wanted in the picture....Nom Nom...(Peanut Butter & Toffee Pudding Cookies).

There it is :) Rice and broccoli cooking. You could just eat the beef and broccoli by itself too!

Next my camera got sidetracked. These two are always at my feet...waiting for ANYTHING to drop onto the floor. My two hoovers.

Back to the food. When the rice and broccoli had about 3-4 minutes left, I pulled the steak strips out and put them in a skillet heated to medium-high. I cooked them for about 4-5 minutes.

I turned the heat off, then added the broccoli. I mixed it a bit to get the broccoli covered in sauce.

Ta-Da!!! Beef & Broccoli with Rice.
